Bedtime, made easier

Reading aloud by age: from babbling baby to tween

One of the trickiest things about children’s books is that they carry no real age guidance, so the right length and the right words are often guesswork. Here is a rough guide.

Birth to 2: rhythm and closeness

Tiny ones get less from the plot and everything from your voice, the rhythm, and the cuddle. Short, sing-song, repetitive tales are perfect.

3 to 5: characters and a little adventure

Now they want a character to love and a gentle problem to solve. Keep it warm, keep it not-too-long, and expect to read the favourite forty times.

6 to 8: bigger worlds, real curiosity

Children this age can follow a proper story arc and love facts woven in. This is a wonderful age for tales that quietly teach, the Romans, the deep sea, the stars.

9 to 12: longer journeys and real feelings

Older children enjoy chapter stories that unfold over time, and themes that take them seriously: friendship, fairness, being brave. The language can stretch them a little.

Because every child is different, every Tales by Tuck story is pitched to the child’s age, attention span and reading level, so it always lands just right, see how it works.

Give them a story that’s all their own.
